Understanding the Moonology System
The Moonology Oracle is built on the 29.5-day lunar cycle. Its 44 cards fall into four groups: the eight Moon phases (from New Moon through to Waning Crescent), the twelve New Moon-in-sign cards, the twelve Full Moon-in-sign cards, and twelve special lunar event cards including eclipses, Super Moons, and significant planetary conjunctions.
Each card carries the energy of its specific lunar phase or event. Phase cards speak to the quality of a particular moment in the cycle; sign cards add the flavour and focus of the zodiac sign through which the Moon is moving; and special event cards mark extraordinary celestial moments that amplify ordinary energies.
Preparing for a Reading
Before drawing, take a moment of quiet and formulate your question. The Moonology Oracle works well with all types of questions — from the practical ("What should I do about this situation?") to the contemplative ("What does this cycle of experience want to teach me?").
You may like to check the actual lunar phase at the time of your reading; drawing a New Moon card during a literal New Moon is a powerful confirmation. However, the oracle works at any time — its cards speak to the energy of any moment, not only to astronomical timing.
Reading the Cards
Phase cards (1–8) tell you what kind of energy is active: initiating, building, acting, refining, completing, sharing, releasing, or resting. When a phase card appears, ask: "What is this phase asking me to do or be right now?"
New Moon-in-sign cards (9–20) focus the fresh-start energy of the New Moon through a specific zodiac lens. New Moon in Aries means a bold, self-directed new beginning; New Moon in Pisces points to a spiritual, compassionate, or imaginative new chapter.
Full Moon-in-sign cards (21–32) bring the illumination, harvest, and release energies of the Full Moon into a specific domain. Full Moon in Taurus highlights material security and sensory pleasure; Full Moon in Scorpio illuminates the deep, transformative, or hidden aspects of a situation.
Special event cards (33–44) mark extraordinary moments. Eclipse cards signal accelerated change or dramatic revelation. The Super Moon amplifies all energies. The Void of Course Moon urges patience and restraint. Each special card has its own distinct guidance.
Simple Spreads to Begin
For your first readings, start simply. A single card drawn in the morning answers: "What lunar energy is guiding me today?" A three-card spread of New Moon intention / Present phase / Release needed maps your current lunar journey. A five-card spread covers: intention, action, adjustment, release, and rest — one card for each phase arc of the cycle.
The oracle also works beautifully at actual New and Full Moons: draw one card at the New Moon to set a theme for the cycle, and one at the Full Moon to understand what is completing or being revealed.
Developing Your Lunar Practice
Keep a Moon journal. Track which cards you draw most often, and notice whether your readings align with your actual emotional and energetic experience of the lunar cycle. Over time, you will develop a felt sense of each phase — and the oracle will become a language for something you already know in your body.
The Moonology Oracle invites you into a relationship with time itself — understanding that life moves in cycles, that nothing is permanent, and that each moment in the cycle has its own wisdom, its own invitation, and its own irreplaceable gift.
